No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The leader reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an rapid rate, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
