This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could enable a chance to flee".

In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.

His son, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to murder the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The security forces stepped in and around 1,500 people were detained.
