The United States central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
